A day of nature discovery

The 12th annual Pine Barrens Discovery Day will be a full day of fun for the whole family. Visitors can learn about one of Long Island’s most important natural areas by experiencing it firsthand. Participate in fun shops, nature walks, Kids Discovery Center games and activities, and exhibits for the entire family. Our fun shops include presentations about Long Island’s birds of prey, marine life, underwater robotics and ROVs, birds of the barrens, fire rangers, wildlife forensics and more. Also join expert naturalists on guided walks along the trails of the refuge and on the Carmans River.

This year the commission will be crowning a Pine Barrens Discovery Day champion. You can visit special stations where you’ll meet characters including a bee, a butterfly and even George Washington, all who will tell you about their special relationship to the Central Pine Barrens. Then you can test your knowledge about everything you learned in a fun quiz game at the end. Everyone takes home a prize, but the four finalists will face off in a final quiz game battle for the big trophy.
