Assemblyman Murray honors animal shelter for Pet Rescue Awareness Month

On October 26, Assemblyman Dean Murray visited the Brookhaven Animal Shelter to present a proclamation to Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and Animal Shelter Director Ashley Behrens, recognizing October as Pet Rescue Awareness Month in New York State. Throughout the month, animal advocates, supporters, pet owners, and citizens have come together to protect, and acknowledge all animals’ positive contributions to society.

More than seven million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year and most of them are given up by their owners or found by Animal Control on the streets. Only about 649,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners, leaving millions in to be housed in shelters or euthanized. The Brookhaven Animal Shelter has a “no kill” policy and some animals have been living at the facility for two years or more.

Assemblyman Murray said, “Pets who are in a shelter, count on loving and caring individuals to care for them in their time of need. Supervisor Romaine, Councilman Loguercio and all of the folks at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter do a great job at making sure these animals are cared for and are ready to go to a new forever home. I think it’s important that the general public knows all of the good that these shelters and rescue groups do for our most vulnerable fury friends. When thinking of adding a pet to your family, please remember to first look to our shelters and rescues.”

Supervisor Romaine said “Anyone who is thinking about adopting a pet should come down to the Animal Shelter and meet our cats and dogs. These animals have so much love to give, so let’s get them out of the shelter and into a forever home with a loving family.”

Councilman Loguercio said, “I encourage everyone who loves animals and wants to adopt a pet to visit the Animal Shelter. These animals really need to be in a home where they can be part of a family.”

Anyone interested in adopting a dog or cat should visit the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven.
