As Buddy the elf says, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” Nobody knows how to kick off the holiday season like Buddy! Come see the OCEAN Arts production of Elf the Musical Jr. starring William Paca Middle School students, November 18-20, and catch that holiday spirit.
Elf the Musical Jr. is a family-friendly show that includes many of the funniest moments from the beloved Will Ferrell holiday film, with the addition of catchy music and full-blown song and dance numbers. “I’m singing! I’m in a store and I’m singing!” sings Buddy, encouraging his newfound crush, Jovie, to get into the Christmas mood. In Santa’s workshop, the elves are “Happy All The Time,” and the streets of New York City bustle with holiday tourists and busy commuters.
Director Kyle Imperatore and musical director Kaitlin Albus were so impressed by the talented kids that came out to audition, they decided to double-cast the show. Several main characters will be played by different actors for different shows. The roles of Buddy, Jovie, Michael and Emily will be shared, with each actor performing one evening and one afternoon show. “We found it impossible to choose between these actors, they were all so good and could all do the part wonderfully, so we decided to try something new, and give them all a chance to shine,” said Imperatore.
This production is truly a collaborative community effort. OCEAN Arts is a newly formed non-profit, formerly acting as the cultural arts committee of the William Floyd Community Summit, which remains a valuable partner in these productions. They work closely with the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library Friends of the Arts Inc., and with the William Floyd School District, which provides funding for performance rights and materials, and makes these opportunities for students possible though unwavering support.
