Heavy snow, blizzard conditions ahead

A blizzard warning is in effect from 3 am to 6 pm Thursday, February 9, 2016.

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a blizzard warning for our area and Suffolk County which is in effect from 3 am to 6 pm EST Thursday. The winter storm Snow accumulations are expected to reach 10 to 14 inches. Heavy snow will begin late tonight through Thursday.

Hazardous and dangerous travel is due to snow covered roads and poor visibilities. Blowing and drifting snow is likely. Local power outages with downed trees and power-lines is also possible as winds will reach 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Temperatures will quickly fall into the 20s.

A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely which will lead to whiteout conditions making travel extremely dangerous. It’s advised that you do not travel in these conditions. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.
