As of the release date of this issue of the Advance, the government has been shut down for 34 days, making it the longest in U.S. history. Businesses and organizations across Long Island have been lending a hand, giving out food, hosting collection drives, or establishing new programs to help government workers who have been without pay for over a month. These are some of the local organizations or businesses that are looking for help and are reaching out to help others.
Angels of Long Island
The East Patchogue nonprofit has opened its doors to even more people during the shutdown. Since it began, a makeshift food pantry was created and founder Debbie Loesch says government workers, mainly from the IRS and air traffic control, have been coming in every day. Angels of LI is looking for donations of nonperishable food and grocery store gift cards, which can be dropped off at their headquarters at 350-23 East Main Street.
Bayport Wellness Center
The Bayport Wellness Center is offering free massages and facial treatments to government workers during the shutdown. Gift cards are available to those affected, and can be picked up at the 573 Middle Road location. ID is required for verification.
Federal workers can get a free lunch special or 20 percent off a family pack at Island Empanada in both Medford and Lake Ronkonkoma. A valid federal ID is required. The Medford location is at 2040 Route 112.
Congregational Church of Patchogue
The Congregational Church on Main Street will host a session on Jan. 23 for anyone affected by the shutdown, which includes a free haircut and a set of groceries. Those interested can also call the church to make an appointment.
Fry Daddy’s first brick-and-mortar location on South Ocean Avenue in Patchogue is welcoming government workers to come in for 25 percent off and free fountain drinks for the duration of the shutdown. The store is located at 58A South Ocean Avenue.
