Patchogue Advance Inc. purchases Tri Hamlet News

The Patchogue Advance Inc., owner of the Long Island Advance, the Suffolk County News, the Islip Bulletin and the Tide of Moriches, has purchased the Tri Hamlet News, which is strictly an online news site, Tri Hamlet covers the Shirley, Mastic and Mastic Beach areas as well as portions of the Longwood School District, according to Patchogue Advance Inc. vice president Terry Tuthill. Tri Hamlet was purchased from Jo Vega and her son, Ronnie Matthews.

“We are very excited to add Tri Hamlet to our family of newspapers and online news sites,” said Tuthill. “This gives us the ability to better serve an area that is lacking in news and information about the tri hamlet area.”

Vega and her family resided in Shirley and Mastic for nine years. Her two daughters graduated from William Floyd High School. She was an avid photographer covering local events when she saw the opportunity to create a truly local, community-driven newspaper. Vega and Matthews decided to create a prototype of the publication they had envisioned and pitched the idea to local businesses and community leaders. They wanted to create a news source that would share uplifting stories from an honest and neutral standpoint. There was an overwhelmingly positive reaction and this encouraged the two to launch Tri Hamlet News.

Together with Vega’s photojournalism background and Matthews’ expertise in design and marketing, the team developed a new way to provide the community with a reliable and trustworthy source for hyperlocal news. Thanks to the popularity of social media, Tri Hamlet News got its start online with a handful of followers. Months later, they quickly grew to thousands of readers and became the No. 1 read publication in our area.

“Both Ronnie and I are excited that Terry and his father are taking over Tri Hamlet News,” said Vega. “Knowing the wonderful reputation that the Long Island Advance and the Tide of Moriches have, we are confident that our well-loved news source will continue to grow and be an asset to the tri hamlet community.”
