Colonials girls and boys basketball advance to final four

The William Floyd Colonials girls and boys varsity basketball teams have advanced to the final four in their respective tournaments. After dominating victories, both teams are one step closer to achieving their goals.

League champion girls varsity basketball team

The No. 2 William Floyd Colonials girls varsity basketball defeated No. 7 North Babylon by a score of 74-41 in the Section XI Class AAA quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 24.

With suffocating full-court pressure defense and an efficient offense, the Colonials dominated throughout the game. With their playoff win, William Floyd’s overall record this season improves to 20-1.

The Colonials continue their playoff push with a semifinal showdown against No. 3 Walt Whitman on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The girls lost in a heartbreaker to Walt Whitman 49-42.

During the season, the Colonials beat Walt Whitman twice: 45-38 on Jan. 6 and 66-53 on Feb. 7.

Team members include Brooklyn Barnes, Chloe Campbell, Kelis Gandy, Kayla Gilmore, Shy Hawkins, Kayden Meyer, Victoria Nelson, Zen Pastor, Natalie Samlihan, Janiyah Smith (manager), J.J. Stewart, Jacky Sutherland, Destiny Talbert, Ava Tiedemann, Rylie Wiegand and Andie Will.

The coaching staff includes Rich Sinclair, head coach, and assistant coaches Max Campbell, Michael Clauberg and Robert Hodgson.

League champion boys varsity basketball team

The No. 2 William Floyd Colonials boys varsity basketball team defeated No. 7 North Babylon by a score of 60-52 in the Section XI Class AAA quarterfinals. The Colonials controlled the game from the opening tip to the final buzzer, continuing their tremendous play this season. The victory also improved William Floyd’s overall record this season to a staggering 21-0.

Up next for the Colonials was a semifinal matchup against Northport on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m. The game was played at Longwood High School. Scores were not available as of press time.

During the season, William Floyd beat Northport 67-53 on Dec. 29.

Team members include Geo Alvarez, Corey Bazemore, Adam Gulsen, Jermaine King, Joey McLaurin, Phillip Mitchell, Dahmorian Moses, Jawuan Smith, J.J. Smith, Sharod Sutton, Sae’Vion Ward, Jake Yourison and Jayson Yourison.

The coaching staff includes Will Slinkosky, head coach, and assistant coaches Thomas Stines and Darrell Sumpter.
