Students from William Floyd High School will celebrate the end of their high school careers Friday at the annual senior prom. Held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, the theme will be “A Night of a Thousand Lights,” taking advantage of the luxurious decorations available at the venue.

The event has been in the planning stages basically since the doors closed on Junior Prom last year, said Brian Kennedy, an assistant principal at the high school. It’s also the first time the event will be held at Villa Lombardi’s.

Kennedy added that while the prom needs decorations, music, and more to be planned, parents and students are involved in several trainings to make sure the evening is fun but safe. Parents and students must attend meetings on school policies related to prom, held by school officials, as well as meetings with the Sheriff’s Department and school attorney, who speak about social host laws and Leandra’s Law. Social host law is to prevent adults from knowingly allowing underage drinking or drug use in a home they rent or own. Leandra's Law (Child Passenger Protection Act) is a New York law making it an automatic felony on the first offense to drive drunk with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle, and setting the blood alcohol content at 0.08. Parents and students also must sign a contract agreeing to adhere to these rules.

Students wanted to utilize the lighting available to them for the theme, which will, no doubt, bring glamour and star quality to the 2019 prom.

“It creates a nice ambiance,” Kennedy said.

The William Floyd school community recently donated the following for students to enjoy the prom: 61 gowns/dresses, six suits, six tuxedo rentals, 12 pairs of dress shoes, nine gift certificates for local salons, six men’s haircuts, 10 prom tickets and approximately $300 worth of jewelry. The high school’s office staff organized the annual William Floyd High School prom gown giveaway. The following businesses also donated: The Dressy Group, Monti’s Barbershop, Pzaz Clothing, Estelle’s Dressy Dresses, Fantasia Bridal Center, Omnibus Fashions, Sue La La Couture, Rico’s Clothing, Karako Suits, Shirley-Mastic Community Service Inc. and Hidden Treasure Thrift Shop.
