To help the non-medical workers and everyone in between, the New York Press Association has developed a promotion to encourage people to make and donate masks to local newspapers for redistribution to people who need them.
We at your family of hometown newspapers have decided to jump on board with the effort and thought it would be fun to engage the community in this useful project. So, if you would like to make and donate a mask to us, please mail the masks to the Long Island Advance at 20 Medford Avenue, Patchogue, NY 11782.
We are accepting non-medical cloth masks, stylish or silly, plain or fancy. We will not be accepting medical or N95 masks; please donate those to your local hospital. We will then select a category of winners and distribute the masks to essential service workers including reporters, supermarket workers and other essential employees.
The winner will receive a gift card to a restaurant in their hometown.

It is becoming increasingly important to wear a mask in public for non-medical uses. Local grocery stores and other essential operations are requiring customers wear a face covering to be permitted inside. But most importantly, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending everyone wear something on their face whenever they leave the house to help stop the spread. Masks can be sewn or simply made with leftover materials, like clothing or bandannas.
Those in the medical profession have asked us to make masks for non-medical use – for all citizens when they go out in public, but especially for people who are working in public like reporters, grocery store and drugstore workers, patients in waiting rooms, etc.
Even with the homemade masks, social distancing is encouraged. The best defense is still staying home and washing your hands. If you wear a cloth mask, do not touch your face or mask, make sure the mask tightly fits your mouth and nose, and after you wear it in public wash it in hot water.
