On Saturday, October 14th, from 5 pm until 8 pm, the Friends of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge (FOW) will host a special benefit night including a “nature art” exhibit featuring female artists from Long Island’s south shore, a silent auction, live music from The Shipmates, and wine and cheese refreshments. The event is $30 per person for advance tickets, or $40 at the door. Advance tickets can be made via the FOW website, or by check payable to “Friends of Wertheim”, mailed to 340 Smith Road, Shirley, NY 11967. Reservations are held at the door.
“The Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is a fabulous asset for preserving the natural beauty of Long island’s south shore region,” said Claire Goad, Friends of Wertheim president. “Your contribution will help assure that FOW can continue its tradition of providing educational and environmentally sensitive programming at the refuge.”

The Wertheim is a 2,550 acre refuge on the south shore of Long Island that is bisected by the Carmans River; a New York state designated scenic river and one of the largest on the island. Wertheim hosts a variety of habitats including oak-pine woodlands, grasslands and fresh, brackish and saltwater wetlands. These habitats attract and support many types of wildlife including white-tailed deer, osprey, muskrat, fox, turtles, frogs and fish. The refuge also serves as a haven for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors and songbirds.
The Wertheim is part of the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which consists of seven national wildlife refuges, two refuge sub-units and one wildlife management area. Collectively, the ten units are approximately 6,500 acres in size. Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is home to the refuge complex headquarters and visitor center.
