‘It’s our town, slow down’

On Saturday, May 4, the Village of Brightwaters will be promoting Pedestrian Safety Day throughout the Village. The theme for the event is “It’s Our Town, Slow Down.”

“The goal of the event is to make drivers aware that their bad driving habits have serious consequences,” shared mayor of Brightwaters, John Valdini. “Speeding and not fully stopping at stop signs put pedestrians and other drivers in danger. It’s meant to try and wake people up and take some responsibility for their driving habits.”

Volunteers will be placing 400 lawn signs that feature the message, “It’s Our Town Slow Down,” which will be distributed by volunteers throughout the village on Pedestrian Safety Day. Additionally, message banners will be put up throughout the village, and ribbons will be attached to every stop sign.

An open meeting to the public was held at Village Hall on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m., in which residents were able to brainstorm ideas and help to plan the Pedestrian Safety Day events.

If you are interested in volunteering to help coordinate putting up ribbons on your block, and confirm that the people who requested lawn signs have them, message Valdini your contact information by emailing Mayor@villageofbrightwaters.com. The more people involved, the bigger the impact will be.

The village is also accepting donations to cover the cost of the event. The Peter Pan Diner has given a generous donation to help sponsor the event, and the village would be grateful to anyone else interested in donating.
