Shirley woman dies in boat crash

Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a boat crash that killed a woman east of Moriches Inlet in Moriches yesterday.

Mi Hua Hsu, 56, of Shirley, has been identified as the woman killed in the crash. Hsu and her husband, Jack Chin, were on a boat drifting just east of the Moriches Inlet, when their vessel was struck by 50-foot Sea Ray, operated by Robert Burkhardt, 65, of East Moriches.

The Sea Ray with three people aboard was traveling westbound a quarter-mile off Cupsogue Beach at Cupsogue Beach County Park when it struck the couple. Chin jumped from the boat, and Hsu was thrown into the water.

Chin, 50, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

Hsu was pulled from the water by the Coast Guard and taken to the Coast Guard station, where she was pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Both boats were impounded for safety checks.

Wanted for Patchogue assault (photo)

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who assaulted a woman in Patchogue earlier this month.

Two women were in an alleyway, just west of the Patchogue-Medford Library on Main Street, when they were approached by a group of men on July 7 at approximately 3:30 a.m. One of the men made lewd comments toward the women. After a verbal altercation, the man assaulted one of the women. Detectives do not believe the other men participated in the assault.  Hate Crimes detectives are investigating the incident since the victims are a same-sex couple who believe they were targeted.

The victim was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as black, wearing a red bandana, red shirt and red pants.
