Season success, playoffs set to start

The William Floyd School District, in collaboration with the Special Olympics of New York, just concluded its third season of “unified sports,” a program which provides students with special needs the opportunity to participate in a team sport facilitated by varsity student-athletes. The team has put together a strong season and qualified for the playoffs, which were set to begin yesterday, Wednesday, May 29. “The student-athletes that participate in unified basketball take a great deal of pride in being a part of this team,” said head coach Nicole Alesi, a William Floyd High School physical education teacher and the girls junior varsity basketball coach. “During practices and games, they display teamwork, good sportsmanship and team unity. Overall, unified basketball not only gives student-athletes an opportunity to be part of an athletic team that competes against other schools, but an opportunity to forge strong relationships with peers and adults.”
