Seniors honored at Black History Month celebration

Six William Floyd High School seniors, Kianna Hawkins, Alex Isiofia, Shamiah Michel, Mia Murrell, Jahneca Williams and Dijon Wilson, recently received the Town of Brookhaven Black History Achievement Award from the town’s Black History Commission for achieving and maintaining a stellar grade point average of 3.5 or higher. These student-scholars were honored at the organization’s 28th annual Black History Month celebration held at Brookhaven Town Hall on Feb. 1. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Black Migrations,” emphasizing the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities. While inclusive of earlier centuries, this theme focused especially on the 20th century through today. Alex Isiofia and Mia Murrell also had the opportunity to represent William Floyd with speaking roles at the celebration. The students and other attendees also enjoyed a night of African and Caribbean culture including music, dancing and traditional delicacies.
