Supervisor Romaine Reminds Residents to Renew for Enhanced STAR Program On or Before March 1

Supervisor Ed Romaine is reminding seniors 65 and older that they must renew for the Enhanced STAR program on or before March 1. The New York State School Tax Relief Program or STAR, is a school tax rebate program offered in New York State aimed at reducing school district property taxes on the primary residences of New York State residents. Enhanced STAR provides an increased benefit for the primary residences of senior citizens aged 65 and older with qualifying incomes. It exempts the first $64,200 of the full value of a home from school taxes as of 2014-15 school tax bills (up from $63,300 in 2013-14). In Brookhaven Town, STAR exemptions apply only to school district taxes. The program was enacted in August of 1997.

“If they haven’t already renewed, seniors should make a point to do it before March 1st,” said Supervisor Romaine. “The Enhanced STAR program keeps more money in the taxpayer’s pocket and I don’t know anyone who isn’t in favor of that.”

For more information about the Enhanced Star Program, visit or call the Town Assessor’s office at 631-451-9051 Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
