Tangier Smith Elementary School teachers Michelle Montalbano and Caitlin Contes challenged their students to be as “Pilgrim-like” as possible today. Kids ditched their back packs for pails, pencils for chalk, and other adapted materials to understand how materials changed over the years. They contrasted things of the now to the then.
By studying diagrams and non-fiction books of Pilgrim outfits, students replicated Pilgrim clothing and learned about dialect and varied language. Students also used materials from their science 21 kit to create and build “Spoolmobiles” to get the idea that Pilgrims had to build, test and work as a team to accomplish something. Mercedes Meat Market helped to put the finishing touches by helping to provide a feast to the students and their buddies.
