On November 28, Councilman Dan Panico (right) was joined by Mastic Beach Fire Chief and Suffolk County Legislator-elect Rudy Sunderman (left) at the demolition of a burned-out zombie house located at 3 Roberts Road East in Shirley.
The house, which sustained major damage during a fire in 2016, had been a source of numerous resident complaints. It was demolished by the Town’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner.
Councilman Panico said, “This latest demolition continues the Town’s most aggressive crackdown on suburban blight in history. By tearing down these dilapidated structures, we are improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods.”
