Mastic Beach, NY, November 7, 2018 – Two William Floyd High School ninth graders and twin sisters, Katie and Kellie Tang, recently had the opportunity to perform a piano duet of Johannes Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 5” at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center in New York City as first prize winners of the New York Concert Festival International Competition.
Both Katie and Kellie, 14, have shared their excitement for this opportunity and are “honored” to have been selected as winners of this competition. This duet is no stranger to hard work and success as they are both enrolled in honors classes and involved in various activities including some that intersect such as student government and concert orchestra.
Kellie, who is legally blind, plays violin in the chamber orchestra, is a member of the jazz band for piano, participates in the Stony Brook University (SBU) Young Artists Program, which offers talented young musicians the opportunity to advance their ensemble and musicianship skills, and broaden their musical horizons with the guidance of an exceptional and devoted faculty at SBU. She has also been a New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Level 6 performer on the piano since sixth grade and a NYSSMA Level 4 performer on the violin. She also received a near-perfect rating (37/38) at the American College of Musicians “National Piano Playing Auditions.” She also practices the piano somewhere between three and three-and-a-half hours per day.
Katie, who is the elder sister by about 12 minutes, is also very active in music and extracurricular activities. In addition to her participation with concert orchestra and student government, she is involved in a yoga club, and has performed as a NYSSMA Level 6 on the piano and a NYSSMA Level 4 on the violin. As an eighth grader at William Floyd Middle School last year, she had a top 10 academic ranking. She is also working to master sign language.
Both have high aspirations for the future – Kellie’s goals are to attend The Juilliard School, receive her doctorate and become a famous pianist. Katie plans to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. With their hard work, determination and talent, they are sure to achieve all that they desire.
