For the second consecutive year, the William Floyd Middle School Quiz Bowl team took first place in their division and placed fourth overall at the Regional Science Quiz Bowl tournament held at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Quiz Bowl is a fast-paced 19-team competition covering a range of disciplines from the life sciences, earth and space sciences, general science, mathematics and energy held at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The team had six impressive victories to advance to the finals including two wins over the reigning regional champion R.C. Murphy Junior High School (Three Village School District), before falling to the eventual champion Locust Valley team in the finals.
Led by eighth-grade Regents Living Environment teacher Ms. Mary Nappi, the team consists of students Brendan Bertos, Ian Hua, Louis Parrinello, Chloe Hangley and Rachel Zummo.
“I hope to instill the fun of competitive learning while preparing students for future successes in some of the world’s fastest growing fields in science research and engineering, as well as expose them to opportunities offered at Brookhaven National Lab,” said Ms. Nappi.
The Regional Science Quiz Bowl is an annual premier academic competition for middle school students and William Floyd Middle School has earned several trophies in past competitions.
