William Floyd Girls Varsity Tennis Wraps Up Stellar Season

Team Ranked Third in the County; All Players Received Athletic Honors

The William Floyd Girls Varsity Tennis team had a powerful legacy to live up to this season. The team’s history boasts 10 straight seasons of playoff matches and this year’s team followed suit by making it to the semi-finals in the Suffolk County Playoffs before losing to Half Hollow Hills West in a 4-3 match. The team is currently ranked third in the county, fifth on Long Island and is recognized as one of the Suffolk County Big Four Champions. Their 2012 overall record is 17 wins and two losses.

“This is a tremendous achievement,” said Dave Pia, Head Tennis Coach, William Floyd School District, who credits the girls’ combined hard work and discipline, in addition to year-round training, for the team’s continued triumphs. “The school’s winning tradition is terrific, but it’s the players’ dedication to the game that has brought them this far.”

The players’ commitment and Pia’s formula for success has not only served the team well, but each individual member as every one of them has achieved athletic honors. Those players and their accomplishments are as follows:

All-County Team:

·         Kelsey Whelpley

·         Devin Messina

·         Kelci Henn

·         Kayla D’Addario

·         Erika Hesselbirg

All-League Team:

·         Christina Cali

·         Emily Vigliotta

“The mental edge and work ethic these players have developed to be consistent champions will take them wherever they want to go in life as these skills will help them both on and off the court,” said Pia. “We are all so proud of them here at Floyd.”
