William Floyd Middle School recently held its third annual PTO Spelling Bee, a competition between 40 of the school’s top spellers, which lasted 12 exciting rounds and took nearly 120 words before eighth grader Ana Berry was crowned the champion. For her efforts, Ana will compete against the best spellers in Nassau and Suffolk counties at the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at Hofstra University in February with a chance for the winner to represent the region next spring at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Coming in second place and serving as Ana’s alternate for the Long Island Regional Bee is seventh grader Crystal Molina; and serving as the second alternate with a third-place finish is seventh grader, Hailey Carey.
The William Floyd Middle School Spelling Bee is sponsored by the William Floyd Middle School PTO, which provides t-shirts to all of the student participants and pays the entrance fee for the winner to compete in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee. Special thanks to the Spelling Bee coordinators, Principal Carolyn Schick, teacher Linda Czarnomski and PTO President Theresa Caputo; as well as teacher pronouncer Candice Carr; and teacher judges Roy Lee, Beatrice Foster and Cindy Franck.
