A winter storm warning now in effect until midnight tonight for the area. Heavy snow with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches with the highest accumulations occurring in eastern sections of Long Island. Areas of over a foot on the south fork of Long Lsland are likely.
Visibility will be one quarter mile or less at times with snow being heaviest in the afternoon then tapering off late by midnight. North winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. The temperature will be in the mid 20s.
Travel will become hazardous due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibilities. A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
