Legis. Rob Calarco leaves his post with an impressive list of accomplishments. Although he was a bit reluctant to name them, here’s a list of some of the major projects we’ve written about in the Long Island Advance pages over the years.

• Securing space for the Carnegie Library, moved from Lake Street.

• Introducing significant legislation in Suffolk County leading to the opioid lawsuit the county ultimately filed and won.

• Canaan Lake’s restoration.

• Lake Street and Waverly Avenue turnaround and the walking, biking trail at the Patchogue River.

• An additional land parcel purchase, 11.59 acres, along the Swan River.

• Working with the Avery property owners over the years, culminating in their acceptance of the county’s offer of purchase.

• The Swan River restoration.

• Advocating for $21 million in NYS funding to hook up 500 south Patchogue homes to sewers; the original NYS commitment was $18 million.

• Supporting county money for cultural grants.

Calarco often collaborated with Patchogue Village mayor Paul Pontieri regarding local needs. “As the mayor of the village, it’s extremely important that those in government understand they have to work together, in the village and those that surround it,” said Pontieri. “The success of any community is driven by those leaders, and Rob Calarco over the last 10 years has been an ally to the village as well as a friend and resident of this community. He’s always focused on what’s best for everyone.”
