One of the buildings at the Avery Homestead will be turned into a gift shop and information center as part of the restoration of the historic estate in East Patchogue, the treasurer of the Greater Patchogue Historical Society said at a meeting of the Focus East Patchogue community group on Thursday.
The one-time plant shed will be refurbished and turned into the Little Red Shed, which will sell souvenirs reflecting the history of the Avery property, Patchogue and East Patchogue, Steve Lucas said. It will be similar to the St. James General Store, he said.
Lucas also gave an update on other renovations to the other buildings on the historic 11.5-acre property on South Country Road,
Renovations to the main house, which dates to the late 1800s, are nearing completion, Lucas said, including new paint and carpeting. Another house built in 1820 is in serious need of repair, including a new roof.
Suffolk County acquired the Avery Homestead last year for $1.95 million, 30 percent of which was funded by the Town of Brookhaven.
Earlier this year, the county announced an additional $250,000 for repairs.
A Christmas tree lighting at the Avery property is scheduled for Dec. 7.
