For the upcoming elections, there are three ways for voters in Suffolk County to cast their ballots. Voters can cast their ballots in person during early voting or on Election Day at one of 28 locations that will have Early Voting starting on Oct. 26 until Nov. 3.
Voters will also be able to cast their ballots by mail with either an early mail or absentee ballot.
For early mail ballots, there are many convenient ways to cast your vote. Rather than placing your ballot in the mail, it can be dropped off at the Suffolk County Board of Elections office no later than Nov. 5 by 9 p.m., brought to an early voting poll site in Suffolk between Oct. 26 and Nov. 3 or any poll site in Suffolk County on Nov. 5 by 9 p.m.
When casting your vote, remember to flip over your ballot. This year, there will be two propositions on the ballot. Proposal one is an amendment to Article 1 Section 11 of the New York State Constitution. and proposal two is a proposition regarding the Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Act.
Proposal one, if passed, will additionally protect New Yorkers from ethnicity, age, disability, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and pregnancy or pregnancy outcomes. It would also protect against unequal treatment based on reproductive healthcare and autonomy.
It is an amendment to the formerly known, “New York Equal Rights Amendment.” It will be listed on the ballot as “Amendment to Protect Against Unequal Treatment.” Currently, the amendment protects New Yorkers from discrimination based on race, color, creed or religion.
Proposal two will revise the Drinking Water Protection Program, which is funded by one quarter percent sales and use tax. It would create a New Water Quality Restoration Fund, which will be supported by a one eighth percent sales and use tax for clean water projects. The current sales and use tax in Suffolk County, NY is 8.625 percent.
The amendment involves the Resolution No. 526-2024, A Charter Law Pursuant To The Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Act. It will amend Article XII of the Suffolk County Charter to extend and revise the Suffolk County Drinking Water Protection Program.
If passed, clean water projects and improvements in drinking water, bays and harbors will be funded until 2060.
