Bayport-Blue Point boys varsity lacrosse met Shoreham-Wading River at Longwood High School last Thursday night with the victor to be esteemed the county championship. The BBP Phantoms contested the SWR Wildcats for the Suffolk County Class C Title Game.
In Suffolk Division II, during the regular season Spring campaign Bayport-Blue Point sported a distinguished record of 15-1 finishing in first place in DII while Shoreham-Wading River had an admirable record of 10-6 with a fourth-place finish.
The Phantoms knocked off Harborfields in the Suffolk Semifinals while the Wildcats defeated Kings Park in the prior round. In the Suffolk Title Game, Bayport-Blue Point led 4-1 after one quarter of play. The second quarter was vice versa as Shoreham-Wading River scored four goals and gave up one.
The Suffolk Title Game was deadlocked at 5 at halftime. BBP shutout SWR in the third quarter scoring two goals and surrendering zero. Then in the final quarter of the evening the Phantoms outlasted the Wildcats scoring three goals in the fourth opposed to their opponents 2. Dan Aiello broke an 8-8 tie with a goal 1:30 to go in regulation and the Phantoms fended off the Wildcats to win by a score of 9-8 to give Bayport-Blue Point their first Suffolk County Championship since 2011. For the Suffolk County Champs, Dan Aiello scored three goals. Maclin Keyser scored two and had one assist.
Ben Morris notched one goal and two assists. Michael Luce compiled a goal and an assist. Ryan Hannaford and Connor Curran had one goal each. Goaltender Brady Smith tallied 12 saves. For Shoreham-Wading River, Liam Kershis scored three goals and Liam Gregorek scored two. Goalkeeper Jaden Galfano made nine saves.
BBP lacrosse played Wantagh for the Long Island Class C Championship on Wednesday.
“Could not happen to a more deserving group. Senior-heavy team that has worked so hard. Selfless group of young men that are so talented but even greater off the field. I want to practice and compete with them for as long as possible,” said head coach Doug Meehan.
