Be safe this Halloween!

It’s an exciting time for little ones, but as Halloween nears, it’s also a time when kids can be at risk for injuries. Dr. Peter Vaccaro at NYU Langone Medical Associates – Bridgehampton Pediatrics is encouraging all parents and caregivers to be prepared with simple safety tips this Halloween season.

“It’s an exciting time of year for kids; however, there may be some safety risks that we may not always think about,” said Dr. Vaccaro. “By keeping a few small safety tips top of mind, Halloween can be safe and fun for everyone.”

Heading out in the neighborhood?

Make sure your children’s costumes are in light colors and are reflective. Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks, not to walk in between cars. A 2019 study from JAMA Pediatrics says 4-to 8-year-old children experienced a tenfold increase in pedestrian fatality risk on Halloween, with the risks highest around 6 p.m. when it is getting darker. You can also make it fun by adding some glow sticks for the kids or flashlights!

‘Trick-or-Treat,’ not ‘Trip and Fall’

Make sure that costumes fit and that your child can see where they are going. This will prevent falls that can lead to a visit to the ER and put an end to the spooky festivities.

Fright Night!

Neighborhood streets and certain houses can get crowded while out trick-or-treating—review with your youngsters what to do and how to contact you if they are separated.

Keep it Spooky

Remember, the most important tip: have fun! There are plenty of Halloween parades in town, closed streets for trick-or-treating, and events for kids on Long Island!
