The 2024 Summer Challenges theme Adventure Begins at the Connetquot Library

The library is an adventure every day, from the depths of the ocean to the Milky Way, from far-off lands to community parks, from a classic to the newest book. Your library card is a passport to unearthing ideas, fostering innovation, exploring new paths, and much more. This summer, libraries across the country and across the county will celebrate in unique and innovative ways.

Connetquot Public Library’s Summer Kick-Off begins on Friday, June 21, from 6 to  8 p.m. and continues on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. Face painting, green screen photoshoots, caricature drawing, and crafts for all ages will be offered. Library members signing up in person during the kick-off will receive a free giveaway while supplies last.  Members are free to register online as well.  All are welcome to participate in a Community Art Project: Decorate a Pinwheel to be placed on the library grounds for all to enjoy.

The summer newsletter details all the exciting ways to earn raffles and prizes for children, teens, and adults.  With a robust schedule of family events, including movies, outdoor adventures at Byron Lake and Lake Ronkonkoma Beach, Family Bingo, and an escape room, these challenges are just the beginning.  Become a superhero, juggle with Jester Jim, unite in a scavenger hunt, check off a bucket list, celebrate New York State Parks, and embark on an I Spy Adventure as our community family comes together for an unforgettable summer.

Discover boundless adventures by reserving free museum passes or an item from our Library of Things. Celebrate the future or journey to the past, to all the places that make New York home. Visit some of Long Island’s most thrilling attractions with discounted tickets and codes. They also invite you to join the Suffolk County Libraries 2024 Summer Tour beginning July 1.  Your free Suffolk Summer Tour Booklet is available at the library’s front desk.

Summer classes are full of excitement.  Imagine the adventure of a new career with resume preparation and career counseling or crafting summer gems for display and enjoyment. Basking in the anthems of youth at a summer concert, finding inspiration in a lecture, or exploring paths to peace, wellness, and health.  Experiment with the newest technology or book a virtual-reality experience.  This is the adventure that begins at your library.

From snacks and trivia around the world or around the corner, travel-inspired crafts, games, and more.  Write, paint, create, bake, babysit, battle with books, decorate, prepare for college, prepare for fun.  Become one of the helpers by registering for community service programs and opportunities available throughout the summer.  Join with other teens, become a team, and establish lifelong friendships.  This is the adventure that begins at your library.

Connetquot Public Library strives to impart a lifelong love of learning.  Beginning with our youngest members, a summer of singing, dancing, music, movement, sports, crafts, laughter, and language awaits celebration.  Growing and learning has never been so much fun. Oceans, planets, animals, marionettes, camping, and the beach are just some of what they’ll learn and memories they will treasure.  This is the adventure that begins at your library.

As our school-age members create some of the same memories, Maker Zone programs will help them travel to the pyramids and outer space, perhaps Journey Through STEAM, taking flight or soaring to the stars. Backpack Through Peru or climb Everest, cheer on the Summer Games, design in 3D—the possibilities are endless. Let us welcome you to kindergarten with the Magic of Amore. This is the adventure that begins at your library.

Even as Summer Reading has grown to a Summer Challenge, let us not forget the power of books at any age, whether a picture book, an easy reader, a graphic, or a full-length novel.  Book discussions or solitary reading inspire the imagination, revisiting history, peeking into the future, taking you to some mysterious destination.  A journey to the heart or self-discovery, experiencing the world in someone else’s shoes while finding your own.  This is the adventure that begins at your library.

Many of these adventures require registration and Connetquot Public Library membership but all are welcome to enjoy our programs where no registration is required. Registration for Adult programs begins on Thursday, June 6 at 9 a.m.  Registration for Childrens and Teen programs begins on Friday, June 7 at 9 a.m.
