Suffolk County officials aim to celebrate young Suffolk residents in the next few days during its inaugural “Youth Week.”
The week of events from May 16 to 23 includes a job fair, an awards ceremony and a day of community service.
Suffolk County Youth Week is the result of legislation sponsored by Legislator Richberg and approved by the county legislature last year to designate the third week of May as “Youth Week” beginning in 2021.
The series is co-sponsored by County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, County Executive Steve Bellone, County Legislator Jason Richberg, and the County’s Youth Bureau and Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs.
“Our young people have sacrificed a great deal over the last year, but they have not let that stop them from making incredible contributions to our county,” Calarco said. “We have seen and felt their energy in significant ways, whether they were generously helping seniors secure vaccine appointments or making their voices heard on issues that are important to them. … It will be our honor to recognize their efforts, help prepare them for the workforce, and recognize their commitment to their communities.”
The weeklong celebration will kick off with a virtual job fair on Monday, May 17. The program, which begins at 5 p.m. on Zoom, will help Suffolk teens find summer jobs by connecting job-seekers with local employers who will be virtually present to handle applications and interviews. Bellone said that Youth Week is designed to provide youth with the tools they need to continue to succeed and recognize and honor them.
“Every day, whether it is through community service, recreational sports, various forms of art, or school clubs, our young people contribute to the vibrancy of our communities in innumerable ways,” Bellone said in a press release.
On Wednesday, May 19, the county will host its inaugural Youth Awards, which will recognize young county residents who have gone above and beyond in helping their community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Youths who performed community service during the pandemic will be honored in a virtual award presentation.
Youth Week will conclude with A “Day of Service” on May 22. Young people and youth groups may sign up to tie a ribbon on the Suffolk County COVID-19 memorial in honor located outside the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge to honor individuals who lost their fight to COVID-19.
