Decorating light poles in Mastic-Shirley

A new tradition on Montauk Highway

Posted

Businesses on Montauk Highway within the the Mastics and Shirley Chamber of Commerce’s relevant area have been solicited to participate in the first annual Light Pole Decorating Contest, promoting beautification during the holiday season as well as a festive atmosphere. The contest is free to enter; you only need to provide the decoration supplies.

Small businesses that applied have been allowed to decorate since last Saturday, Dec. 12, and the deadline for putting up decorations is Friday, Dec. 18. Entries needing to be spruced up on Dec. 19 can be done before 3 p.m. in time for judges to reach a verdict of a winner, which will be announced on Monday, Dec. 21.

Judging criteria includes uniqueness of the design, storyline/theme and the overall presentation of the decorated light pole.

Light poles in the contest are limited and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. As a business, if you have a light pole situated outside your business and it’s an assigned pole, that business will have first choice for that pole. It is important, though, that only the chamber of commerce can officially select a business’ designated pole number.

Zip ties, string, twine or thin wire to secure your decorations to the pole are all permitted, and the chamber of commerce asks businesses to not use tape, as it does not hold in cold temperatures.

Of course, the pole decorations must have a holiday theme.

Other rules include the decorations’ ability to withstand strong winds, decorations cannot block the sidewalk or street traffic in any way, the pole’s electricity is off-limits, a maximum height of five feet tall, and decorations do not cover up any signage.

All decorations must be taken down the week of Jan. 4. Any remaining after Jan. 9 will be removed and jeopardize future entry into the contest for a given business.
