A Fair Housing Forum will be hosted by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Community Development on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. This important event will be held at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at One Independence Hill, in Farmingville.

The agenda will include an overview of pertinent topics surrounding this issue, such as an explanation of what fair housing means, an outline of the Brookhaven Fair Housing Plan, and there will also be an open forum available for public comments and suggestions on fair housing matters in the Town of Brookhaven. An online fair housing survey will also be open from Feb. 1 through 28. A link to the survey can be found via the Town of Brookhaven website.

All are invited to discuss affordable housing matters in Brookhaven. Public comments are encouraged. Those unable to attend can still participate by submitting written comments and questions to Brookhaven Commissioner of Housing Alison Karppi at akarppi@Brookhavenny.gov. Anyone who requires special accommodation, or an interpreter, is asked to contact the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Community Development at 631-451-6600 at least three days prior to the forum taking place.

Know your rights: According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development website the Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when renting or purchasing a home, obtaining a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or when engaging in other housing-adjacent activities. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing due to race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), familial status, and disability.
