One of the best things about visiting the Fire Island Lighthouse is that there is truly something for everyone. From meandering walks on the boardwalk, strolling on the beach, exploring the museum, or climbing the 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse, the National Seashore has a lot to offer.

When taking the trip, head to Robert Moses Parking Field 5 and drive down to the end of the parking lot. From there, it’s about a 20-minute walk on the boardwalk to get to the lighthouse. I recommend wearing sneakers and packing water, as my first time visiting, I underestimated the length of the walk.

Once on the lighthouse grounds, you can walk down to the bay or the ocean, but if you’re able, I recommend starting with the walk up the lighthouse first, as you’ll want to complete it when it’s not boiling hot outside. The climb isn’t extremely taxing, and as someone who is terrified of heights, I can say the views are absolutely worth it.

Once you’re done taking photos at the top, be sure to check out the museum—but it’s important to note that masks are required. You’ll learn about the lighthouse’s history as well as the people who used to care for it. The gift shop is also a great stop, with lots of really cute shirts and presents to pick up for friends and family.

Before leaving, walk down to the bay to check out the boathouse and see an authentic surfboat and live-saving equipment used by the United States Life-Saving Service.
