From the first game of the season, the William Floyd High School girls varsity basketball team have proven that they are among the elite teams in Suffolk County. Capping off their regular season with a dominant 48-27 victory over Riverhead, the Colonials (13-3 league record, 14-6 overall) clinched their first league title since 1982 and a playoff spot for the second consecutive season! William Floyd is the fourth seed in Section XI’s AA playoff bracket, the highest seeding in program history, which earned themselves a bye into the quarterfinals.
The Colonials’ success this season comes as no surprise to the team. “We returned 10 players from last season’s 16-5 team,” said head coach Rich Sinclair. “The girls had a tremendous preseason. Once fall sports ended, they put time in the gym in October and November to get a jump-start on preparing for this year. Many girls also participated in our summer league and worked out in the gym over the summer.”
The Colonials’ starting five this season have been stellar. The duo of All-County players Kayla Gilmore and Jacky Sutherland are both in the top 15 in points per game in Suffolk County. Kayden Meyer is coming off an All-League season and continues to anchor the Colonials defense, leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots.
The Colonials team roster includes Keyaisia Brewster, Emma DiMaio, Kayla Gilmore, Payton Lavallee, Amy Lin, Kayden Meyer, Victoria Nelson, Natalie Samlihan, Jacky Sutherland, Ava Tiedemann, Alyvia Verga, Andie Will and Arianna Zeldin. Coaches include Rich Sinclair (head coach), and assistant coaches Robert Hodgson, Max Campbell and Michael Clauberg.
