Game-day ready

With his collection, William Floyd teen is prepped for Super Bowl LV

Fourteen-year-old Shirley resident Donovan Codrington has been prep- ping for Super Bowl his entire life. Maybe some of his love for the game of football came from being named after Philadelphia Eagles player Donovan McNab circa 2006, or the fact that his Nana gifted him an official helmet from each team every year since he was 2.

Either way, he said, “I am just really excited for the game,” adding that he completed his collection at the age of 12.

Today, Codrington, a ninth grader at William Floyd High School, features his helmet collection of all 32 teams on shelves above his bed in his room. This year, he also saved his money to purchase a custom NFL Jersey.

His favorite team is the New York Giants, though he will be rooting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers... mostly just to see Tom Brady take home his seventh ring. His dad, Paul Codrington, will be, too.

“My son spent his whole life up until a year ago collecting every single football helmet from every team in the NFL,” said mother Kelly Codrington, who noted that he pulls the helmets and displays the winning teams throughout the playoffs. “This kid is obsessed!”

Donovan is also an avid baseball and football player himself.

The Codrington family will be spending the 55th championship game socially distanced in their backyard with appetizers, a TV, outdoor heater and a fire. Nana will be there, too.
