Getting to enjoy the great outdoors

East Islip resident wins specialized bike

Kyle Engblom loves being outside. He enjoys spending time on the water and savoring the fresh air with his family and friends.

However, Engblom has fatty acid hydroxylase-associated neurodegeneration (FAHN), which affects his muscles and means he uses a wheelchair. Something that he wasn’t able to do was ride a bike—until now.

Engblom recently won a specialized bicycle from the Great Bike Giveaway. His mom, Gina, had posted about the contest on Facebook and received an outpouring of support from the East Islip community, where she has lived her whole life.

“There were votes from people I didn’t even know,” Gina Engblom said.

Engblom said she and her family were so thankful and appreciated all the support Kyle received for the giveaway.

The bike, which retails for about $7,000, is made by the company Van Raam, which specializes in bikes for people with disabilities. Kyle is able to sit on the front while someone behind him pedals and steers.

“I just want him to be able to enjoy everything and be happy,” Gina Engblom said of Kyle.
