Habitat for Humanity dedicates  new Mastic home

As part of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s mission to help families achieve their dreams of homeownership, the nonprofit organization held a Home Dedication and Key Presentation Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 17, at 9 Ditmas Avenue in Mastic, for Daniel and Jennifer Marchelewski and their three children.

The family, along with volunteers and the construction staff at Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, worked side by side to build this home. Middle Island-based Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s mission is to strengthen communities by providing quality, affordable homes.

"As we continue to combat the affordable housing crisis, we helped another well-deserving family move into a brand-new home today,” said Lee Silberman, chief executive officer and executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. "On behalf of our organization, I want to thank every individual who was involved in making homeownership possible for the Marchelewski family. Seeing the smiles on their faces warms our hearts and strengthens our commitment to assisting Long Islanders in need.”

While growing up, Daniel’s parents worked hard to make ends meet, but his family faced many tough times. Jennifer had a turbulent childhood. The family of five has been living with extended family while searching for a home on Long Island, but they have not been able to find one that is affordable. The idea of helping to build their own home and being given the opportunity to take homeownership preparation classes felt like a great opportunity to them.

“Our Habitat home will mean we will be able to raise our children in our own controlled environment and watch them grow into amazing people,” said Jennifer. “We can now continue to live here in Suffolk County close to family and friends, and we can’t wait to finally have them over to our house for dinner. Thank you, Habitat Suffolk, for giving us this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
