International Beach Cleanup Day

Posted

On Sept. 18, volunteers at Smith Point Beach in Shirley celebrated International Coastal Cleanup Day by ridding the beach of litter, fishing lines, and other forms of waste that pose a threat to the marine ecosystem. The idea for the event was developed by Sen. Alexis Weik in conjunction with Save the Great South Bay, a marine environmentalist group, founded in 2013, and dedicated to protecting the South Shore of Long Island from pollutants or habitat destruction. The group’s coverage area extends from the Coopers Neck Pond in Southampton to Thixton Creek in Malverne Park Oaks, Nassau County.  To register as a volunteer or to learn more about Save the Great South Bay’s mission, visit their website.
