Library to host Bike Rodeo

Posted

Families, children of all ages, and teens through grade 12 are invited to bring their bicycles to the Mastic Beach Branch of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library on Saturday, May 2, from noon to 3 p.m. for an afternoon of safety, creativity, and outdoor fun at the library’s upcoming Bike Rodeo.

The free, drop-in event will be held rain or shine at the Mastic Beach Branch, 369 Neighborhood Road, in the heart of downtown Mastic Beach, a neighborhood setting that makes the library a natural gathering point for young riders and families.

Designed as a fun and educational community event, the Bike Rodeo will feature bicycle safety tips from the Suffolk County Police Department’s COPE (Community Oriented Police Enforcement) team, along with bike-themed activities and creative decorating stations. Participants may also receive take-home items and enjoy a themed photo opportunity.

“This is exactly the kind of neighborhood-centered program that makes the Mastic Beach Branch such a special place,” said Stephen Burg, branch manager of the Mastic Beach Branch. “Because we’re right in the downtown area, many children and families already come here by bicycle, making this a perfect setting to promote safe riding habits while creating a fun and memorable community experience.”

The branch is equipped with outdoor bike racks that can accommodate up to six bicycles, helping support the library’s role as an accessible stop for local families traveling through the area.

“Programs like this reflect the library’s commitment to meeting families where they are and creating experiences that combine learning, wellness, and community connection,” said Lonna Castro, director of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library. “Partnering with the Suffolk County Police Department’s COPE team adds an important public safety component while keeping the event lively, welcoming, and family-friendly.”

“Community-centered programs like the Bike Rodeo reflect the library’s broader role as a trusted neighborhood resource and gathering place,” said Joseph Maiorana, president of the Board of Trustees. “By bringing together families, public safety professionals, and the library in a setting that promotes both learning and wellness, this event reinforces how our branches serve as anchors for civic life in the communities we are proud to support.”
