Light projection art earns international renown

Posted

The Patchogue Arts Council’s MoCA LIghts V took over downtown Patchogue for Columbus Day weekend.

Opening the event was Boundless Soul at the Patchogue Library mural with opera, interpretive dance, and art projection performance with Danielle Davis and Heidi Alasuvanto.

As Long Island’s first and only light projection festival, the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce characterized the event as one of “innovation and wonder” in a statement.

Site-specific projections illuminated the facades of contemporary and historic architecture.

This year MoCA LIghts was accepted into the International Light Festival Organization.

The ILO is a worldwide network of public light festivals, public light events and light art experts. Other members include projects in the United Kingdom, Italy, Austria, Lithuania, Israel, Belgium, Romania, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Germany, Singapore, Spain, and Estonia.

The Patchogue event is only the second lights festival in the United States to be accepted into the ILO after Seattle, Washington.
