‘Light the Night’ with your community

Light the Night has become a treasured tradition for many communities as a way to celebrate togetherness and unity. The event has residents place luminaries outside their homes. When the whole community participates, the streets glow with beautiful lights.

Liz Mayott, the president of the Islip Chamber of Commerce, said that the event began over 10 years ago in Islip. Her husband is from Bay Shore and she fell in love with the event that has been a staple there for years.

This year’s Light the Night in Islip will take place on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. There is no set time for houses to place their luminaries out.

Kits for Islip’s Light the Night can be purchased multiple ways: online through the ICC website at www.islipchamberofcommerce.org, through Venmo @IslipChamber, or checks made out to Islip Chamber of Commerce. Interested residents can also call 631-581-2720 for more information or stop by Good Mojo Printing at 169 Islip Avenue from noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The chamber encourages anyone who participates to share photos on their Light the Night Facebook page.

In nearby Bay Shore-Brightwaters, Light the Night will be celebrated on Dec. 11 at 5 p.m., with a rain date of Dec. 17. Residents are encouraged to place luminaries on sidewalks, walkways, driveways and yards. The event is sponsored by the Bay Shore Beautification Society and each kit costs $10 and contains 12 luminaries. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to enhance the beautification of the community. The Beautification Society works on projects such as hanging baskets along Main Street, the Halloween Festival, Haunted Garden, Reflection Garden, sidewalk cleaning by veterans, Winterfest and holiday decorations.

Kits for the Bay Shore-Brightwaters celebration can be purchased at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library, Brightwaters Village Hall, Brightwaters Deli, the Bay Shore YMCA, Brightwaters Beer Distributor, Amanda’s Bakery, Willy Nilly, Bright Bay Deli, Dulce de Leche, Variety Florist, Brightwaters Hardware, Samhal Interiors Hair Loft and more businesses.
