The Maggie Fischer Memorial Cross Bay Swim committee gathered on Thursday, Sept. 19 at FatFish Restaurant in Bay Shore, for their final meeting of the year. For the first time in 97 years, the July 9 event was canceled due to fog.  One hundred and thirty swimmers, their kayakers, and support boaters were on the beach and in the water in front of the Fire Island Lighthouse waiting to participate in the 5.6-mile swim. Despite the disappointment, the event raised and distributed $125,000 to its charities, Hospice Care Children and Family Bereavement, and a scholarship in Maggie’s name at St. Anthony’s High School. The committee discussed lessons learned from this year and a date for next year’s swim.
