On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Suffolk County police commissioner Rodney K. Harrison and Third Precinct Crime Section Lt. Matthew Colonna held a press conference, during which they announced the arrest of an Islip father and son who had over two-dozen cats living in hoarding conditions in their home.

In a post on the department’s Facebook page, the SCPD said that Third Precinct Crime Section officers responded to a residence on Lake Street, in Islip, following reports of animal cruelty. The post continued to say that investigators seized 26 cats, which were brought to the Islip Animal Shelter for evaluation. The cats were overcrowded with sparse food and no water, according to investigators.

“The 72-year-old resident and his 39-year-old son were each arrested and charged with 10 counts of failing to provide proper sustenance to an animal and 10 counts of failing to provide proper food and drink to an impounded animal,” the post stated.

The post continued that the Third Precinct Crime Section officers were assisted by the Biological Animal Safety Team (BEAST), the Islip Town fire marshal, Islip Town building inspector, Islip Town HAZMAT and the Islip Fire Department.
