National Historic Marker Cleanup Day celebrated in Islip

Erica Carter cleans the historic marker for Third Town Hall, whose marker is located on the west side of the traffic circle at the current Town Hall at 655 Main Street. The town board decided to issue a certificate of indebtedness for $300,000 to purchase the property of Third Town Hall in 1931.

People everywhere enjoy historic markers, from roadsides and parks to historic sites, or even their own neighborhoods. Markers help to educate the public, encourage pride of place, and promote tourism.

The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet participated in this year’s National Historic Marker Cleanup Day to clean the hamlet’s 30 markers.

According to The Historical Marker Database, there’s more than 195,000 markers in the country, but many have not received cleaning or care for years. Launched as a grassroots celebration by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the nation’s leading funder of roadside markers, National Historic Marker Day brings people together to maintain their markers by cleaning them and providing an opportunity to recognize and preserve history. This fun and family-friendly celebration is held the last Friday of every April.
