The New York Rangers are donating enough street hockey equipment to Patchogue-Medford Schools for the district to bring the sport to each of its middle and elementary schools, starting in October.

Retired Rangers player Brian Mullen was among those who visited Oregon Middle School on Friday to make the announcement to a gymnasium of excited students, several of whom wore Rangers jerseys.

The goal is to introduce the sport to youngsters who have never played before, said Mullen, a native New Yorker who learned the game playing street hockey and went on to an 11-year career with the Rangers, Winnipeg Jets, San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders.

Mullen, who signed autographs for the students, was joined by members of the New York Police Department’s hockey team, who showed them the finer points of stickhandling and goal scoring.

Hockey is already part of the physical education curriculum at some of the district’s schools, including 600-student Oregon Middle School.

The Rangers’ donation will allow the district to expand the program to reach between 4,000 and 5,000 students districtwide, Oregon Middle School principal Bryan Lake said.

“It’s something we thought we could expand and grow here,” Lake said.

Meghan Coope, an Oregon Middle School physical education teacher, said her students, several of whom play field hockey, are excited to learn a new sport.

“This will be wonderful,” she said.

The Rangers are donating indoor hockey sticks, nets, pinnies (vests) and balls.

In addition to the equipment, Rangers representatives will also return in the fall to host a hockey clinic for teachers and staff.
