Pink flags raised for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the nonprofit West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition (WIBCC) carried on their yearly tradition of raising pink flags. Held in partnership with the Good Samaritan University Hospital last Sunday, many local leaders and community members took part in the special day.

A vision that started back in 2012, the event now stands as a yearly dedication to the women, men, and families that have been affected by breast cancer. For those looking to remember a loved one, personalized ribbons to decorate the pink flags were available with a donation to the WIBCC.

Founded by Lorraine Pace back in 1992 following her own diagnosis with breast cancer, she made it her goal to raise awareness of breast cancer in Suffolk County. Now, the nonprofit continues to work alongside Pace and local groups to lower the rate and severity of breast cancer as well as continue to support those affected by it.

The West Islip Fire Department showed up in support of the ceremony, and leaders from Catholic Health were a key part of the ceremony, including Good Samaritan University Hospital president Justin Lundbye.

The flag raising was a success, highlighting the continued need for breast cancer awareness every October as more people start their own battles with the disease.

A performance by West Islip High School Vocal Motion provided music and entertainment for the celebration. The group thanked WIBCC for their work with the community.

Health information was also shared during the ceremony, highlighting resources for anyone needing additional help.
