Playcrafters finds a new home

Brookhaven Elementary opens doors to local theatre co.

Playcrafters turns 64 next year and when it does, the Bellport community theater mainstay will have a new location for its permanent home.

Starting with its 2024 season, which will begin in May, Playcrafters will hold its productions at Brookhaven Elementary School in Bellport.

It’s a homecoming for Playcrafters, which held its shows at South Country School buildings for many years.

Its first productions were at Bellport High School starting in 1960, and then at Bellport Middle School for many years. It was based at the Boys & Girls Club in Bellport from 2013 to 2022.

“The district has been nothing but cooperative with us and we can’t wait to be true partners in the community,” Playcrafters president Flo Federman said of the upcoming relocation.

She said she’s hoping South Country students at all levels can be a part of the productions, both onstage and behind the scenes.

Federman credited several people from South Country Schools and Brookhaven Elementary School for finding a place for Playcrafters: school board president and Playcrafters member Cheryl Felice, superintendent Anthony Santana, district facilities director Frank Pirro, Brookhaven Elementary principal Dr. Rebecca Raymond, and vice principal Anthony Cavalluzzo.

Playcrafters’ next production will be a semi-staged reading of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” on Nov. 3 and 4 at Christ Episcopal Church Hall in Bellport.

Playcrafters typically does two to three full-scale productions, plus staged readings, for a season that runs from May to November.

The schedule for the 2024 season hasn’t been set yet. Playcrafters is soliciting for suggestions from local directors interested in directing a show, Federman said.
