Recycled glass to be used in concrete

On June 1, Supervisor Ed Romaine visited the Town of Brookhaven’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) during installation of concrete rings manufactured using pulverized, recycled glass aggregate. The rings are being put in place to improve drainage and reduce standing water around the facility.  “The Town of Brookhaven is continuing to look for new markets to recycle glass and we are hopeful that the New York State DEC will give us a Beneficial Use Determination so we can include recycled glass in other infrastructure projects,” Romaine said.

The ring manufacturer, Giaquinto Brothers LLC Masonry, has been testing alternate uses of glass and began mixing in glass pulverized to grit. It is then strengthened with concrete and the material is encased and sealed in the concrete mix. The company took a load of glass recycled by Town of Brookhaven residents to make the 10’ drainage rings and cover material that are being installed at the MRF.”
