CEED and Inspiration Plus are pleased to present “Sculpture on The Trail: An Art & Nature Exhibition,” which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery, the Washington Lodge, at 287 South Country Road, Brookhaven, 11719. Seventeen international artists will have their sculptures installed on a one-half-mile trail through Suffolk County forest preserve north of Brookhaven’s Washington Lodge. The theme of the exhibition is encapsulated in the letter Y, which evokes organic branching in nature, in tandem with the eternal questions we ask ourselves, “why.”
Employing a wide range of materials, with some incorporating performance, the sculptors’ work can be discovered in the twists and turns of the shaded trail, in and amongst the animals and trees. There will be an interactive component as well, as the public is invited to participate in attaching thoughts, art, or words to artist Dan Welden’s Y-shaped sculpture on opening day. Local poets will also be performing at the event, some inspired by the works of art, others by what moves them in the natural world. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The sculptures will remain on view at CEED through Sept. 18. A reception will be held to meet and celebrate the artists, with music by jazz band Natural Causes, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., with a contribution of $25 per person (children under 12 attend for free.) Registration is required for the reception, and can be made at ceedli.org.
