South Country names Sottile athletic director

South Country Central School District has a new athletic director, and he brings with him a track record for building successful sports teams.

Martino Sottile was with the Brentwood School District for the past 14 years, where he taught physical education and coached numerous teams at Brentwood High School, his alma mater.

That includes the boys varsity wrestling team, where Sottile was an assistant coach, and the girls varsity soccer team, where he was head coach.

The wrestling team, one of the best on Long Island, won numerous league titles and two Suffolk County championships. Sottile was named Section XI, Division 1 Assistant Coach of The Year twice and League 1 Varsity Assistant Coach of The Year four times.

The soccer team, which was picked to finish 28th out of 29 teams in Sottile’s first year, went on to make the playoffs twice. Sottile was chosen Division 1 Coach of The Year three times.

As an athlete, Sottile played soccer at Brentwood. He also played soccer and wrestled at the collegiate level. He has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland and a master of science degree from Emporia State University in health, physical education and recreation.

Sottile, 37, succeeds Patrick Hayes, who left to become director of health, physical  education and athletics at Eastport-South Manor Central School District.

Sottile, who started July 3, will oversee health, physical education and interscholastic sports for a district whose student body is one of the most diverse on Long Island, both ethnically and economically.

Sottile’s experience of working for the Brentwood School District, which also has a diverse student body, is one of the reasons why Sottile is a great fit for the job, South Country superintendent Antonio Santana said.

“A son of immigrants [from Italy], he has an appreciation for the impact that public schools can have,” Santana said of Sottile, who was one of three finalists for A.D.

Sottile’s role will include not only continuing to develop South Country’s stellar interscholastic sports program, but also encouraging physical fitness among each of the district’s 4,000 students, Santana said.

Sottile said he and Santana share “a mutual positive energy” and a desire to build a positive culture among the students.

Sottile said he’ll be a familiar presence on the sidelines at Clippers games.

“You’ll see me at everything,” he said.
