Starbucks proposed for Route 112

Medford Astoria Bank to be replaced

Starbucks wants to open a store in a former Astoria Bank branch on Route 112 in Medford.

Representatives of the developer, 718 Medford LLC, presented the plans at a public hearing before the Town of Brookhaven Planning Board on Oct. 23.

Plans for the building at 718 Medford Avenue, just south of the Nissan 112 auto dealership, call for it to be remodeled for a 2,568-square-foot coffee shop with a drive-through and outdoor seating facing Route 112. The rest of the 4,886-square-foot building would be reserved for possible future retail space.

The developer plans to install a 50-foot buffer of three rows of evergreen trees along the back side of the property facing homes on Old Medford Road.

Plans call for closing an existing entrance on Old Medford Road, so the only access to the property would be from Route 112.

The planning board put the proposal on the decision calendar for a future meeting.

In other news, the planning board also heard from representatives for Gala Fresh Farms, which wants to open a supermarket in a former furniture store at 803 Montauk Highway in Shirley.

That was also put on the decision calendar for a future planning board meeting.

Gala Fresh Farms, part of Freeport-based Aurora Grocery Group, operates stores in Baldwin and Riverhead.

The planning board next meets on Nov. 20.
